This explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain English rather than the usual thing.
We collect your email address, and only if you give it to us. Your child name and your school list never leave your own device. We never see your card details. We do not sell anything to anybody.
Who we are
Place Right is a trading name of Humewood Rand Ventures Ltd, registered in England and Wales, company number 12868539. We are the data controller for the information described here.
Email us at [email protected].
What stays on your device and never reaches us
Some of what you type into this site is never sent anywhere. It is saved in your own browser, on the device you are using, and we cannot see it:
- Your child’s first name. We ask for it so the screens read naturally. It is stored in your browser and is never transmitted to us.
- Your school list — the schools, distances, notes and ticks.
- Which guides you have marked as read, and your checklist ticks.
Because this is stored in your browser, clearing your browsing data will delete it, and it will not appear on another device. That is the trade-off for not asking you to create an account.
What we do collect
Your email address
Only if you type it in. We use it to send you the free guides, your dates, and reminders tied to your own deadline. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe, and using it stops everything immediately.
Lawful basis: consent.
What the check worked out
If you give us your email, we store the result alongside it: which of the six outcomes applied, your child’s year group, the closing date that applies to you, and roughly where you came from (for example, an advert). We do not store your child name with it.
Lawful basis: consent, and our legitimate interest in understanding which parts of the site help people.
If you buy something
Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. Your card details go to Stripe and never to us. We receive your email address, what you bought, the amount, and a reference number, so that we can give you access and deal with refunds and our accounts.
Lawful basis: performing our contract with you, and our legal duty to keep financial records.
Your postcode
If you use the distance tool, your postcode is sent to postcodes.io, a free public service, purely to turn it into map coordinates so we can measure the distance to a school. We do not store your postcode on our systems. It stays in your browser.
Lawful basis: consent — you choose whether to use the tool.
Analytics and advertising
If you agree to cookies, we use Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and the Meta pixel to understand how the site is used and whether our advertising works. If you decline, none of them load at all. You can change your mind by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
Lawful basis: consent.
Children
This site is for parents and carers, not for children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
We ask for a child’s first name only so the screens are easier to read, and as set out above, it never leaves your device. We never ask for a child’s surname, date of birth, school, or anything else that would identify them.
Who we share information with
| Who | What for |
|---|---|
| Stripe | Taking payments and issuing refunds |
| Cloudflare | Running and protecting the website |
| Make.com | Sending the emails you asked for |
| postcodes.io | Turning a postcode into coordinates, if you use the distance tool |
| Google, Microsoft, Meta | Analytics and advertising, only if you agreed to cookies |
Some of these organisations are outside the UK. Where that is the case, transfers are covered by the UK’s approved safeguards, such as the International Data Transfer Addendum or an adequacy decision.
We do not sell your information to anyone, ever. No school, council, adviser or solicitor pays us for anything, and none of them receive your details.
How long we keep things
- Email address and check result: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, and in any case no more than three years after your last contact with us.
- Purchase records: six years, because tax law requires it.
- Analytics: up to 14 months.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- Tell you what we hold about you, and give you a copy
- Correct anything that is wrong
- Delete it
- Stop using it for a particular purpose
- Send it to you, or someone else, in a portable format
Email [email protected] and we will respond within one month. There is no charge.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would rather you told us first, but it is your right either way.
Cookies
We set no cookies at all unless you say yes. If you accept, Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and the Meta pixel set their own. The site also uses your browser’s local storage to remember your list and your progress; that is not a cookie, is never sent to us, and is cleared when you clear this site’s data.
School information
School names, addresses, types and other details come from the Department for Education’s Get Information about Schools register, used under the Open Government Licence v3.0. That is public information about schools, not about you.
Changes
If we change this page we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects you and we hold your email address, we will tell you.
